Description
Posteriorly oriented, the illustration centers on the biceps femoris long head (caput longum musculi bicipitis femoris) along the posterolateral thigh of an adult female. Its proximal attachment is indicated at the ischial tuberosity, lying medial to the greater trochanter and inferior to the gluteus maximus, then running distally as a superficial hamstring belly lateral to semitendinosus and semimembranosus. At the knee, the muscle mass narrows toward its tendon, which courses to the lateral side of the joint toward the fibular head, adjacent to the short head contribution and the lateral gastrocnemius. Orientation is clear. Clinically, this view matters because the long head crosses both hip and knee, making it the hamstring component most often involved in sprinting-related strains at the proximal myotendinous junction and in proximal avulsion injuries from the ischial tuberosity.
