Description
Centered in an upright female skeletal model, the paired femora (thighbones) are isolated in blue from the surrounding axial and appendicular skeleton, running inferiorly from the acetabula of the pelvis to the knee joints. Proximally, the femoral head sits medial and superior on the femoral neck, with the greater trochanter positioned lateral and the lesser trochanter posteromedial at the proximal shaft. Distally, the shaft flares into the medial and lateral condyles, which articulate with the proximal tibia, while the patellar surface lies on the anterior aspect of the distal femur. Femoral gross anatomy matters because small differences in proximal geometry translate into large changes in hip mechanics and fracture risk, a recurring issue in osteoporotic injury patterns in women. Femoral neck and intertrochanteric fractures follow predictable lines relative to the head, neck, and trochanters, and this orientation guides operative planning for cannulated screw fixation, sliding hip screw placement, or arthroplasty templating. Alignment also matters. Varus malreduction after intramedullary nailing or plating of femoral shaft fractures can be understood quickly when you can anchor the head and neck to the distal condyles in a single whole-skeleton context. Orthopaedic teaching sessions use this kind of selective highlight to introduce femoral landmarks before moving to radiographs, CT, and operative anatomy, and it works well in undergraduate gross anatomy labs when students need to relate the thighbone to the pelvis and knee at a glance.
