Description
Seen in lateral profile, the male skull and upper cervical spine provide the bony scaffold for the superficial and deep vessels of the head and neck. Superficial veins over the calvaria converge toward the temporal region, then descend inferiorly across the lateral neck in the expected corridor of the external jugular vein, superficial to the sternocleidomastoid. Deeper, the internal jugular vein runs more medially within the carotid sheath, receiving facial and pharyngeal tributaries while remaining anterior to the cervical vertebrae and lateral to the laryngeal and pharyngeal airway. The clavicle, scapula, and upper ribs frame the venous outflow as it approaches the subclavian vein at the root of the neck. A lateral view like this makes venous surface anatomy teachable, because it ties palpable skeletal landmarks to clinically used access points. Venipuncture and central venous catheterization at the internal jugular rely on understanding its relationship to the sternocleidomastoid heads and the carotid artery, and the external jugular is often the first visible clue to elevated jugular venous pressure in right-sided heart failure or pericardial tamponade. Scalp lacerations also behave differently than facial cuts, since emissary veins can communicate between superficial veins and dural venous sinuses, a route implicated in intracranial spread of infection.
