Description
Posterior skeletal anatomy is presented in standard anatomical position, with both humeri tinted blue along the brachium on either side of the thorax. Proximally, each humeral head sits superior and lateral to the shaft, aligning with the glenoid cavity of the scapula at the shoulder, while the greater tubercle lies lateral and the lesser tubercle more anterior (partly obscured from a rear view). Distally, the humerus broadens into the medial and lateral epicondyles flanking the posterior olecranon fossa, a clear landmark above the elbow joint where the ulna will seat in extension. Orientation reads cleanly. Emphasizing the humerus in situ, rather than as an isolated bone, helps teach how shoulder-to-elbow alignment sets the corridor for neurovascular structures and common injury patterns. A posterior perspective is also practical for correlating the radial nerve course along the posterior humeral shaft in the spiral (radial) groove, a relationship that explains wrist drop risk in midshaft fractures, and for anchoring the medial epicondyle as the palpable landmark adjacent to the ulnar nerve in cubital tunnel syndrome. Distal epicondylar anatomy matters in trauma as well, where avulsion or supracondylar region injuries alter elbow stability and can threaten the brachial artery and median nerve more anteriorly.
