Description
Shown in profile on an adult male lower limb, the pelvis transitions into the femur, then to the tibia and fibula of the leg, with superficial muscle groups layered around the long bones. Laterally, the iliotibial tract tracks down toward the lateral condyle, while the anterior compartment is defined by tibialis anterior with extensor digitorum longus and extensor hallucis longus running distal toward the dorsum of the foot. Posteriorly, the hamstrings descend toward the knee and blend into the bulky triceps surae, with gastrocnemius sitting superficial and superior to soleus as both taper into the calcaneal (Achilles) tendon region. Medial thigh fullness corresponds to the adductor group, contrasted against the more anterior quadriceps mass (rectus femoris over the vasti) on the front of the thigh. A lateral profile makes the compartmental organization of the leg easier to teach, because you can relate tibia and fibula position to the anterior, lateral, and posterior muscle bellies without losing the proximal context at the hip and thigh. That matters clinically: pain and paresthesia after trauma or revascularization are interpreted by compartment, and the anterior compartment (tibialis anterior and the long extensors) is the classic site for acute compartment syndrome with deep fibular (peroneal) nerve involvement. The fibular head region is also a practical landmark for common fibular nerve vulnerability and for understanding how ankle dorsiflexor weakness produces foot drop.
