Description

Running from the proximal thigh to the dorsum of the foot, the femoral artery continues distally through the adductor hiatus as the popliteal artery, then divides into anterior and posterior tibial arteries that track along the crus beside the tibia and fibula. The anterior tibial artery passes to the anterior compartment and becomes the dorsalis pedis artery over the tarsal region, while the posterior tibial artery courses posterior to the medial malleolus toward the plantar foot. Deep muscular branches and cutaneous perforators are shown in relation to the femur, patella, tibia (medial) and fibula (lateral), with the arterial tree consistently remaining anterior, posterior, medial, or lateral to these bony landmarks. Bony reference points matter. Clinical teaching often hinges on where you can palpate, compress, or inadvertently injure these vessels.
