Description

Running from the anterior ankle onto the dorsum of the foot, the anterior tibial artery continues as the dorsalis pedis artery, lying superficial to the tarsal bones and coursing distally toward the first intermetatarsal space. Lateral and medial tarsal branches arc across the talus, navicular, and cuneiform region, while metatarsal and digital arteries extend anteriorly along the metatarsals to the phalanges. Proximally, the distal tibia and fibula frame the talocrural joint around the talus, providing bony landmarks for the arterial pathways. Fine arteriolar branches are shown fanning into the toes. Dorsal foot arterial anatomy matters because dorsalis pedis palpation and Doppler assessment remain routine screens for peripheral arterial disease, and an absent pulse may reflect proximal inflow compromise or an anatomic variant rather than distal occlusion.
