Description
Running across the dorsum and sole of the male foot, the arterial tree is traced in red over the tarsus, metatarsals, and phalanges, with articular cartilage picked out at the ankle and midfoot joints. Proximally at the ankle, the anterior tibial artery continues as the dorsalis pedis artery on the dorsal aspect of the tarsus, giving tarsal branches and an arcuate artery that sends dorsal metatarsal arteries distally toward the toes. Inferior to the tarsal bones, the posterior tibial artery divides into the medial and lateral plantar arteries, which course anteriorly within the plantar compartment and form the deep plantar arch, communicating laterally with the deep plantar branch of the dorsalis pedis. Fine arterioles extend into the digital rays. Blue companion channels suggest adjacent veins or nerves. Clear depiction of the dorsal plantar connections matters in limb ischemia and in operative planning where collateral flow determines tissue survival. This is the map you want when explaining why an occluded dorsalis pedis pulse does not always predict plantar hypoperfusion, or how revascularization targets shift between the dorsalis pedis, plantar arteries, and the pedal arch in peripheral arterial disease and diabetic foot ulcer care. It also reinforces the relationship of the vascular pathways to the bony landmarks of the tarsus and metatarsals, which surgeons use for incision placement and flap design.
