Description
Anterior lower-limb arterial anatomy is rendered with emphasis on the knee region, pairing osseous landmarks with the principal vessels descending toward the crus. Proximally, the distal femur and patella frame the anterior aspect of the knee joint, while the tibia sits medial and the fibula lateral as the leg continues inferiorly. Red arterial channels course along the deep compartments and around the joint line, consistent with the femoral artery transitioning through the adductor hiatus to the popliteal artery and giving rise to the anterior tibial artery that passes to the anterior compartment, alongside the posterior tibial and fibular (peroneal) arteries more posteriorly and laterally. Genicular branches encircle the distal femur and proximal tibia in a periarticular network. For teaching, this anterior perspective clarifies how the genicular anastomosis maintains perfusion across a flexing joint and why vessel position matters during operative exposure. Total knee arthroplasty, high tibial osteotomy, and tibial plateau fracture fixation all place the popliteal artery and its genicular branches at risk, even when the approach is anterior, because posterior translation of instruments can endanger the neurovascular bundle. This is also the arterial map behind clinical examination: diminished distal pulses after knee dislocation or proximal tibial trauma should raise immediate concern for popliteal artery injury and limb-threatening ischemia.
