Description
Centered on the African male head and neck, the craniofacial skeleton is partially exposed beneath superficial musculature, with the frontal bone, orbital margins, zygomatic bone and zygomatic arch framing the lateral face while the mandible forms the inferior boundary of the lower jaw. Laterally, the temporal region overlies the squamous temporal bone and temporomandibular joint, and the external ear (auricle) sits posterior to the mandibular ramus at the level of the mastoid region. Inferiorly, the neck soft tissues drape over the cervical vertebrae, marking the transition from cranial base to the spinal canal entrance. Orientation is clear. Muscle overlays matter here because many clinically relevant bony landmarks are palpated or approached through them, and this view keeps the relationship honest: the masseter tracks over the mandibular angle and ramus, the orbicularis oculi encircles the orbit, and the sternocleidomastoid defines the anterolateral neck as it runs from mastoid process toward sternum and clavicle. That corridor guides internal jugular venous access and frames cervical lymph node levels, while the zygomatic arch and temporal fossa provide key reference points for temporalis elevation and for approaches used in facial trauma fixation. The TMJ region, where the mandibular condyle sits just anterior to the external acoustic meatus, is a frequent pain generator in malocclusion and bruxism. Suitable for gross anatomy teaching of head and neck surface anatomy, craniofacial osteology, and introductory dissection orientation, it also fits atlases and review texts that connect facial expression muscles to the underlying skull and jaw mechanics.
