Zygomatic process of the maxilla projects laterally from the maxillary body to meet the zygomatic (malar) bone at the zygomaticomaxillary suture, forming the anterior portion of the zygomaticomaxillary buttress. From an anterolateral facial perspective, the process lies inferior to the orbital rim, lateral to the infraorbital foramen, and superior to the alveolar process bearing the maxillary teeth sockets. Medially, the maxillary body contributes to the lateral wall of the nasal aperture, while the frontal process ascends superiorly toward the nasal bone and frontal bone. This is a bony pillar. Zygomaticomaxillary complex trauma often propagates along this lateral maxillary extension, so seeing the zygomatic process in relation to the infraorbital margin and anterior maxillary wall helps explain why infraorbital nerve hypesthesia and malar flattening occur in common tripod fractures. The fixed viewpoint clarifies how the zygomatic process aligns with the orbital surface of the maxilla and the zygomatic bone to support the midface and transmit masticatory forces posteriorly toward the pterygoid plates.
