Description
Frontal process of the maxilla rises from the anteromedial maxillary body as a stout vertical buttress along the lateral margin of the piriform aperture. Superiorly it approaches the frontal bone at the frontomaxillary suture, while its medial surface articulates with the nasal bone and contributes to the lateral wall of the nasal cavity. Posteriorly, the process forms the anterior boundary of the lacrimal fossa region where it meets the lacrimal bone at the lacrimomaxillary suture, with the anterior lacrimal crest marking the transition toward the nasolacrimal groove. Orientation is unambiguous. Surgeons and radiologists care about this ridge because it anchors the medial orbital rim and helps define the pathway of lacrimal drainage into the nasolacrimal canal, so fractures or osteotomy cuts here can alter both orbital support and tear outflow. Naso-orbito-ethmoid trauma commonly propagates through the frontomaxillary region and along the thin lacrimal articulations, and the frontal process is also a reference point when planning dacryocystorhinostomy or assessing post-traumatic epiphora from nasolacrimal duct obstruction. The illustration isolates a bony landmark that is often hard to mentally separate on plain films, and the crisp cortical edges make the sutural relationships to the nasal and lacrimal bones easier to teach and to caption accurately.
