Anterior Jugular Vein

Description

Running superficially in the anterior cervical region, the anterior jugular vein descends close to the midline, typically just lateral to the laryngeal prominence and superficial to the infrahyoid strap muscles. Inferiorly it approaches the suprasternal (jugular) notch, where a jugular venous arch may cross the midline to join the contralateral side, and the vein then courses deep to the clavicular head of sternocleidomastoid toward its terminal drainage. The termination is shown at the root of the neck as the anterior jugular vein empties into the subclavian vein, often via the external jugular vein, with the clavicle forming a key inferior landmark.
