Description
Running superficially across the lateral neck, the external jugular vein descends from the parotid region toward the root of the neck, coursing obliquely over the sternocleidomastoid muscle before entering the supraclavicular triangle. Superiorly, tributaries consistent with the posterior auricular vein and the posterior division of the retromandibular vein converge near the angle of the mandible, while smaller superficial venules from the posterior triangle join along its midcourse. Inferiorly, the vessel pierces the deep cervical fascia just superior to the clavicle and terminates in the subclavian vein lateral to the sternoclavicular joint, with the internal jugular vein expected deeper and more medial within the carotid sheath. Surface anatomy matters here. Because the external jugular vein is the most accessible superficial cervical vein, this lateral view supports safe bedside venous access planning and clarifies why the vein can be prominent with raised central venous pressure or tricuspid regurgitation.
