Description
Emerging from the left ventricle, the ascending aorta courses superiorly and slightly to the right before curving posteriorly as the aortic arch, then continuing as the descending thoracic aorta along the left side of the vertebral column. An x-ray style, semi-translucent rendering allows the aorta to remain the dominant great vessel, with the cardiac silhouette and proximal outflow tract faintly visible around it. Expect the arch to sit superior and posterior to the pulmonary trunk, while the descending segment runs inferiorly through the posterior mediastinum toward the diaphragmatic hiatus. Warm color highlighting tracks the aortic lumen against cooler-toned surrounding myocardium. Attention to the descending thoracic aorta matters because its posterior mediastinal course creates predictable relationships that drive both pathology and approach.
