Description
Centered on the male pelvic inlet, the abdominal aorta descends anterior to the lumbar vertebral bodies and bifurcates at about the L4 level into the right and left common iliac arteries. Each common iliac divides into an internal iliac artery coursing inferomedially into the lesser pelvis and an external iliac artery running inferolaterally along the pelvic brim toward the inguinal ligament. Distally, the external iliac continues as the femoral artery into the proximal thigh, while the internal iliac gives parietal and visceral branches that track toward the pelvic wall and organs, framed by the translucent bony landmarks of the lumbar spine, sacrum, and os coxae. For teaching and procedural planning, this x-ray style presentation helps you read pelvic arterial anatomy the way it appears in fluoroscopy and angiography, where overlapping bony contours can obscure branch points. Ligation or embolization often targets internal iliac branches in postpartum or traumatic pelvic hemorrhage, and a clear mental map of the anterior and posterior divisions reduces the risk of non-target ischemia to gluteal musculature or pelvic viscera.
