Description

Centered in a radiographic (x-ray style) frontal projection, the trachea descends in the midline and bifurcates at the carina into the right and left main bronchi. The right main bronchus courses more vertically and slightly lateral, while the left main bronchus runs more obliquely toward the left hilum, passing inferior to the aortic arch region in standard anatomy. Within each lung field, the bronchial tree branches from lobar (secondary) bronchi into segmental bronchi and finer bronchioles, mapped across the lobes in a semi-transparent thoracic silhouette. Airway branching is the focus. This angle matters because it mirrors how clinicians first encounter the central airways on chest radiography and fluoroscopy, where the carina serves as a dependable landmark for endotracheal tube depth and mediastinal positioning. The asymmetry between the main bronchi also underpins common pathology: aspirated foreign bodies and gastric contents enter the right bronchial system more often, and right upper lobe atelectasis patterns can track back to obstruction near the right main or lobar bronchus.
