Description
Seen in lateral profile, the auricle (pinna) is rendered with clear definition of the helix and its anterior root, the crus helicis, as it courses medially to form the superior boundary of the concha. The tragus projects anterior to the external acoustic meatus, with the antitragus and intertragic notch inferiorly, and the lobule forming the inferior free margin. A small blue behind-the-ear hearing aid sits posterosuperior to the pinna with its sound-delivery component positioned at the entrance of the external auditory canal, immediately medial to the tragus. Facial landmarks of the ipsilateral orbit, nasal dorsum, and lips provide orientation in true lateral view. The crus of the helix is a practical landmark when teaching auricular topography because it separates the cymba conchae superiorly from the cavum conchae inferiorly and guides the eye to the canal axis. That matters in hearing-aid fitting and otologic examination, where conchal bowl depth, tragal prominence, and canal orientation affect retention, acoustic coupling, and patient comfort.
