Description
External occipital protuberance (external occipital tuberance), with its apex termed the inion, stands out on the posterior midline of the squamous part of the occipital bone. From this prominence, the superior nuchal lines sweep laterally toward the mastoid region, while the external occipital crest descends inferiorly in the direction of the foramen magnum. Superiorly, the contour approaches the lambdoid suture with the parietal bones, framing the occipital surface as a single bony landmark within the posterior skull and skull base. Clinically, the inion is one of the most dependable palpable reference points for surface anatomy of the posterior cranium and for standardized measurements used in anthropology and neurology. EEG electrode placement commonly relies on the nasion to inion distance (10–20 system), and the midline relationship between the inion and foramen magnum helps orient posterior fossa and suboccipital approaches where midline dissection follows the nuchal ligament and the trapezius attachment along the superior nuchal line. A hard landmark. It also anchors teaching discussions of entheses, since the ligamentum nuchae and the trapezius and occipitalis attachments relate directly to the bony ridges radiating from the protuberance.
