External occipital protuberance (inion) occupies the midline of the squamous part of the occipital bone, seen from an inferior cranial base perspective where its bony prominence projects posteriorly above the central occipital surface. Lateral to the inion, the superior nuchal lines extend as paired ridges toward the mastoid regions, while the external occipital crest descends inferiorly in the midline toward the posterior margin of the foramen magnum.
