Description

Viewed from a superior oblique angle with the calvaria removed, the male cranium is opened to the cranial cavity, with the cut edge of the frontal, parietal, and occipital bones showing diploë between inner and outer tables. Midline landmarks such as the sagittal and coronal sutures sit superficially, while the cranial base openings cluster inferiorly around the foramen magnum, where the vertebral arteries ascend from the cervical vertebrae to enter the posterior cranial fossa. Anteriorly, the maxilla with its dental arcade remains in place, and the zygomatic bones define the lateral facial buttresses; the mandible is implied inferior to the maxilla even if partially out of plane. Bone texture matters. That superior access to the cranial vault clarifies relationships that drive real decisions in the lab and operating room, from orienting burr hole placement relative to sutures to understanding how posterior circulation reaches the intracranial compartment. The vertebral artery’s course toward the foramen magnum anchors discussions of vertebrobasilar insufficiency, dissection, and the hazards of instrumentation at the upper cervical spine (C1 to C2) where arterial loops can vary. Seeing the foramina at the skull base also supports teaching why lower cranial nerve palsies may localize near the jugular foramen, even when the presenting complaint feels facial. Use this artwork for gross anatomy and neuroanatomy teaching on the cranial cavity and cranial base, for neurosurgical or ENT texts that need a clean superior orientation of foramina and sutures, and for clinical training materials on posterior circulation pathways and craniovertebral junction anatomy.
