Description
Emerging from the posterior bend of the cavernous segment of the internal carotid artery, the meningohypophyseal trunk gives rise to a fine meningeal branch that runs posteriorly along the roof of the cavernous sinus toward the posterior cranial fossa dura. Nearby, the intracranial internal carotid artery lies medial to the anterior clinoid process, while the sella turcica and clivus form the midline bony backdrop. In an internal cranial cavity view, you would also expect adjacent arterial landmarks of the circle of Willis, including the proximal anterior cerebral and middle cerebral arteries, with smaller dural feeders tracing the petroclival region. Course matters here because this meningeal branch contributes to dural vascular supply around the clivus and tentorial attachments, territories that become surgically relevant in petroclival meningioma workups and in endovascular planning. Small but unforgiving. During transsphenoidal and endonasal approaches, the cavernous internal carotid artery and its meningohypophyseal branches define a hazard zone, and their relationship to the sella and anterior clinoid is a common teaching point when explaining cavernous sinus bleeding risks and cranial nerve proximity.
