Description

Radiating from the ophthalmic artery as it courses toward the orbital apex, the short posterior ciliary arteries pierce the sclera circumferentially around the optic nerve and spread anteriorly within the suprachoroidal space. Their branches fan out deep to the retina to form the choroidal circulation, lying posterior to the lens and ciliary body and external to the neurosensory retina. Red arterial channels contrast with blue venous drainage against the white sclera, while the cornea, iris, pupil, and crystalline lens establish the anterior segment relationships. Small vessels, big consequences.
