Description
Running obliquely across the anterolateral neck, the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) is isolated against the underlying male skull, cervical vertebrae, and upper thorax. Superiorly, its thick belly converges on the mastoid process of the temporal bone and the lateral part of the superior nuchal line, then descends anterior to the cervical transverse processes toward two inferior heads. Medially, the sternal head anchors on the manubrium, while the broader clavicular head inserts on the medial clavicle, framing the suprasternal (lesser supraclavicular) fossa and lying superficial to the carotid sheath region. Clinically, the SCM is a landmark muscle that helps you orient neck compartments at a glance, because the internal jugular vein and common carotid artery course deep to its anterior border and are often approached for central venous access. Torticollis (congenital or acquired) commonly reflects unilateral SCM shortening, producing ipsilateral lateral flexion with contralateral rotation, and this view clarifies how the mastoid attachment and dual inferior heads drive that posture. Palpation and local anesthetic infiltration also track its clavicular and sternal heads when evaluating neck pain patterns, lymphadenopathy, or suspected spinal accessory nerve dysfunction affecting sternocleidomastoid strength.
