Description
Arising from the inner surface of the thyroid cartilage and adjacent thyrohyoid region, the thyroepiglottic muscle is rendered as a superiorly directed slip that blends with the lateral margins of the epiglottis, converging toward the epiglottic petiolus. Its fibers sit anterior to the laryngeal vestibule and superior to the ventricular folds, lying medial to the lamina of the thyroid cartilage and lateral to the midline pre-epiglottic space. Superiorly, the bundle approaches the hyoepiglottic ligament and the base of the epiglottis, where its course becomes most clinically legible. Small, focused anatomy. Functionally, the thyroepiglottic muscle is often discussed as part of the thyroaryepiglottic complex that influences epiglottic position and the caliber of the laryngeal inlet during swallowing and phonation. This view supports teaching the mechanics of supraglottic closure and epiglottic tilt, points that matter in dysphagia evaluation and in interpreting endoscopic findings when supraglottic collapse contributes to airway obstruction. Surgeons also refer to these relationships during transoral supraglottic procedures, where the epiglottic petiolus and adjacent fibrofatty planes guide safe dissection.
