Description
Arising from the superficial temporal artery within the substance of the parotid gland, the transverse facial artery courses horizontally anteriorly across the masseter, running inferior to the zygomatic arch and superior to the parotid duct. Along its path it lies superficial to the masseter but deep to the skin and superficial musculoaponeurotic system, with small branches turning medially toward the buccinator and lateral nose while others ascend toward the lateral canthus. Nearby, the facial artery and vein can be inferred at the anteroinferior margin of the masseter, creating a clear contrast between the transverse and vertical facial vascular routes. Spatial relationships matter here. Coverage of this vessel matters in parotid and midface work. The transverse facial artery is a common source of bleeding during rhytidectomy (facelift) flap elevation over the parotidomasseteric fascia, and it can be encountered when raising SMAS flaps or when dissecting near Stensen duct. It also contributes to the vascular basis of cheek and infraorbital soft tissue perfusion, a point that becomes practical when planning local flaps, managing lacerations over the zygoma, or interpreting pulsatile flow adjacent to the parotid region.
