Description
Arising from the zygomatic nerve of the maxillary division (V2) of the trigeminal nerve, the zygomaticotemporal nerve is traced as a slender cutaneous branch coursing toward the lateral orbital margin. From an anterior perspective it passes deep to the orbicularis oculi and adjacent to the zygomatic bone, then turns superiorly to emerge in the temple, where it supplies sensation over the anterior temporal region. Surrounding facial musculature, including frontalis superiorly and masseter laterally over the ramus of the mandible, provides reliable surface context for its path. Nerve color coding distinguishes sensory branches of V2 from the nearby facial nerve (CN VII) branches that fan across the cheek to motor targets. Orientation matters here because the zygomaticotemporal nerve sits in the crosshairs of common periorbital and temporal procedures. Temporal artery biopsy, endoscopic brow lift portal placement, and lateral canthotomy planning all benefit from appreciating where a small sensory branch can be stretched, transected, or entrapped against the zygomaticotemporal foramen and deep temporal fascia.
