Description
Arising from the anterior aspect of the orbit, the anterior ciliary arteries course with the rectus muscles toward the limbus, where they pierce the sclera and contribute to the episcleral and conjunctival arterial circles. Medially and laterally, their small-caliber branches track in close apposition to the muscle tendons, anterior to the equator of the globe and superficial to the uveal tract. The surrounding orbital vasculature is shown in standard convention, with arterial vessels in red and venous channels in blue against the bony margins of the skull and orbital rim. Small but constant. Clinically, these vessels matter because they supply the anterior segment, and interruption during extraocular muscle surgery can precipitate anterior segment ischemia, a recognized risk after multiple rectus muscle procedures in strabismus repair. Their relationship to the rectus insertions also explains why limbal and episcleral injection patterns can localize inflammation near the anterior ciliary circulation, and why cautery or extensive dissection close to the muscle tendons requires restraint. This anterior perspective is the clearest way to connect limbal perfusion with surgical anatomy at the globe’s surface. Use it in ophthalmic anatomy teaching for medical students, optometry curricula, and surgical orientation materials covering rectus muscle approaches, limbal anatomy, and episcleral vessel patterns. It also fits well in atlas plates or journal figures discussing anterior segment ischemia, strabismus surgery complications, and anterior ocular blood supply.
