Description
Anterior to the skull and upper cervical spine, the arterial tree of the male head is traced over bony landmarks including the frontal bone, parietals, temporals, zygomatic bones, maxilla, and mandible. Common carotid arteries ascend in the neck and divide into internal and external carotid arteries near the level of the mandibular angle, with the external carotid giving off facial, lingual, occipital, and superficial temporal branches that course superiorly toward the scalp. Across the midface, the facial artery sweeps obliquely from the inferior border of the mandible toward the angle of the mouth and side of the nose, while supraorbital and supratrochlear arteries emerge superior to the orbits and fan across the forehead. Bony context remains explicit. Teaching the head’s arterial supply benefits from an anterior view because it ties named vessels to palpable surface anatomy, the mandibular notch, the infraorbital rim, the nasal ala, and the temporal line. Ligation, laceration, and iatrogenic injury patterns track these relationships: the superficial temporal artery is targeted in temporal artery biopsy for suspected giant cell arteritis, and the facial artery can produce brisk hemorrhage with mandibular or cheek trauma. Anastomoses between external carotid branches and ophthalmic artery branches also matter in endovascular planning, where inadvertent embolization can threaten retinal perfusion.
