Description
Running from the neck into the craniofacial skeleton, the common carotid artery bifurcates into the internal carotid artery, ascending deep to the mandible toward the skull base, and the external carotid artery, giving off superficial branches to the face and scalp. Laterally, the facial artery courses over the inferior border of the mandible anterior to the masseter, then climbs obliquely toward the angle of the mouth and side of the nose, while the superficial temporal artery rises anterior to the auricle and divides into frontal and parietal branches across the temporal and parietal bones. Posteriorly, the occipital artery tracks toward the occipital region, and the vertebral artery ascends through the transverse foramina of the cervical vertebrae toward the foramen magnum. Bony landmarks remain crisp. Teeth in the maxilla and mandible provide orientation for the facial vasculature. A lateral projection like this is the workhorse for teaching surface anatomy of head and neck vessels because it ties palpable pulses to fixed osseous reference points, from the superficial temporal pulse at the zygomatic arch to the facial artery pulse at the mandibular margin. Clinically, it supports planning and interpretation in facial trauma and reconstructive flap design, where the facial and superficial temporal arterial territories guide incisions and pedicle selection, and it also clarifies why the pterion region is surgically respected given the course of the middle meningeal artery deep to the temporal fossa. Relationships are easy to trace. That matters when correlating laceration patterns with arterial bleeding. Use this asset in gross anatomy and dental curricula when introducing external carotid branches, in neurosurgical or ENT teaching files for skull base and cervical vessel orientation, and in medical publishing figures that need clean separation of bony and arterial anatomy for labeling.
