Description
Anteriorly, the crural fascia (deep fascia of leg) is rendered as a continuous fascial covering that binds the anterior compartment against the tibia medially and the fibula laterally, with the interosseous membrane forming the deep septal boundary between them. Within this compartment, the tibialis anterior lies closest to the tibial crest, while extensor hallucis longus and extensor digitorum longus occupy a more lateral plane, their tendons coursing distally toward the dorsum of the foot. Superiorly the compartment relates to the patellar region and proximal tibia, and inferiorly its tendons pass beneath the extensor retinacula toward the ankle and metatarsals. Clear boundaries. This anterior perspective matters because it matches the clinical corridor where anterior compartment syndrome declares itself, with increased intracompartmental pressure threatening perfusion and the deep fibular (peroneal) nerve. Pain out of proportion with passive toe flexion, paresthesia in the first dorsal web space, and weakness of ankle dorsiflexion map cleanly onto the anatomy shown. The relationship of the fascial sheath to the tibial crest also frames the logic of emergent fasciotomy incisions and the need to decompress adjacent compartments when indicated.
