Description
Running superior to inferior along the left side of the vertebral column, the aorta is shown in lateral profile from the ascending aorta and aortic arch into the descending thoracic aorta, then continuing as the abdominal aorta after passing through the aortic hiatus of the diaphragm. The heart sits anterior to the vertebral bodies within the rib cage, with the aortic root emerging from the left ventricle and curving posteriorly to form the arch before tracking inferiorly. Inferiorly, the vessel approaches its bifurcation into the right and left common iliac arteries near the level of the pelvic brim, with the great veins returning in parallel courses. Bony landmarks, including ribs, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, and the pelvis, anchor the vessel’s position in three-dimensional space. A lateral aorta view matters because the key relationships are sagittal: the descending aorta hugs the anterior aspect of the spine, the arch passes superior to the pulmonary trunk and left main bronchus, and the diaphragm marks the transition between thoracic and abdominal segments that are treated and accessed differently. This is the perspective clinicians use when thinking through traumatic aortic injury at the isthmus (just distal to the left subclavian artery), aneurysmal dilation of the thoracic or abdominal aorta, and endovascular stent-graft planning that depends on proximal and distal landing zones relative to the arch and iliac bifurcation.
