Description
Bisected male skull reveals the cranial cavity with the calvaria removed on one side, exposing the meningeal envelopes over the cerebral hemispheres. Deep to the inner table, the dura mater lines the skull and forms dural venous sinuses, with the superior sagittal sinus running along the midline at the attached margin of the falx cerebri; beneath it, the arachnoid mater spans the sulci as a thin, translucent layer. Bridging veins pass from the cortical surface toward the superior sagittal sinus, while arteries course within the subarachnoid space over the convexity, separated from dura by the potential subdural space. Bone landmarks of the orbit, nasal cavity, maxilla, and anterior cranial fossa frame the section. Arachnoid anatomy matters because it defines the subarachnoid space where cerebrospinal fluid circulates and where acute pathology declares itself on imaging and at the bedside. Subarachnoid hemorrhage from a ruptured saccular aneurysm tracks through cisterns and sulci, while tearing of bridging veins between arachnoid and dura produces a subdural hematoma that spreads along the convexity and crosses sutures but respects dural reflections. Blood location changes management. Use this artwork for teaching meninges and intracranial venous drainage in gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, and neuroradiology blocks, or for publications explaining the distinction between epidural, subdural, and subarachnoid spaces in trauma and stroke pathways. It also suits patient-facing neurosurgery materials describing craniotomy exposure and dural opening around the superior sagittal sinus.
