Description
Positioned in lateral profile, the arterial tree of the adult male head and upper thorax is traced from the ascending aorta through the aortic arch to the brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery. Superiorly, the common carotid bifurcates at the level of the upper thyroid cartilage into the external carotid artery, giving off facial and superficial temporal branches, and the internal carotid artery, which courses deep and posterior to enter the cranial cavity. Posteriorly in the neck, the vertebral artery ascends through the transverse foramina of the cervical vertebrae and contributes to intracranial circulation, while inferiorly the subclavian continues laterally as the axillary artery toward the upper limb. Bone is rendered as a translucent blue scaffold, clarifying vessel depth relative to the mandible, skull base, and cervical spine. Lateral orientation makes the cervical and cranial arterial pathways easier to teach because overlap is reduced and the anteroposterior relationships become obvious. That matters in stroke and neurovascular anatomy: the extracranial internal carotid segment is a common site of atherosclerotic plaque and endarterectomy, while the vertebral artery is vulnerable to dissection with cervical trauma and can be compromised by extreme neck rotation. Landmarks such as the carotid bifurcation and the course of the external carotid branches align well with pulse points, catheter navigation concepts, and surgical corridors in the neck. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and neuroanatomy modules when introducing carotid versus vertebrobasilar circulation, and in radiology or vascular surgery teaching materials that explain angiographic projections and carotid stenosis workup. It also reads well in patient-facing stroke education when you need a side-view map of cerebral inflow without clutter from the contralateral vessels.
