Description
Posteriorly, the distal femur is dominated by the medial and lateral femoral condyles, their convex articular cartilage continuous inferiorly with the tibial plateau cartilage across the joint space. Between the condyles, the intercondylar fossa (notch) forms a deep cleft that opens posteriorly, with the medial condyle typically extending more distally than the lateral. Inferior to the femur, the tibial condyles (medial and lateral plateaus) and the intercondylar eminence align beneath the femoral surfaces, while the fibular head sits lateral and slightly posterior to the proximal tibia. Collateral ligament contours track along the medial and lateral margins of the joint, framing the posterior compartment. Posterior anatomy of the femoral condyles is where many teaching and operative discussions of knee stability become concrete, because the intercondylar fossa defines the corridor for the cruciate ligaments and helps explain graft placement constraints in ACL reconstruction. The notch width also links to impingement concepts and to risk factors for ACL injury, and posterior cartilage wear patterns often correlate with flexion loading in osteoarthritis. A clean posterior perspective makes it easier to relate bony geometry to meniscal motion and to the femorotibial contact shift that occurs as the knee moves into deeper flexion.
