Positioned superior to the tibial plateau, the distal femur is shown anteriorly with the medial and lateral femoral condyles separated by the patellar surface (trochlea) as the knee bends. Blue-tinted articular cartilage caps the condyles and extends into the intercondylar region, where the roof of the intercondylar notch sits posterior to the trochlear groove. Inferiorly, the medial and lateral menisci lie on the corresponding tibial condyles, their thicker peripheral margins framing the central intercondylar area.
