Description
Presented in lateral profile with a sagittal section, the cerebrum is opened to expose medial neural anatomy, with cortical gyri and sulci superiorly and the diencephalic region positioned centrally above the brainstem. Inferior and posterior to the cerebrum, the cerebellum sits in the posterior cranial fossa, continuous anteriorly with the pons and medulla oblongata. The spinal cord descends caudally from the medulla through the vertebral canal, while segmental spinal nerves project laterally from the cord toward the intervertebral foramina. Surrounding osseous landmarks include the cranial vault and the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae aligned in their normal sagittal curvatures. A lateral sagittal slice is the working view for teaching the brainstem and its continuity with the cervical cord, where lesions can produce mixed long-tract and cranial nerve findings. Clear delineation of the medulla is clinically useful when discussing respiratory and cardiovascular centers, and when localizing infarcts in the vertebral and posterior inferior cerebellar artery territories. The vertebral column profile adds context for compressive myelopathy, including cervical spondylosis and thoracic disc herniation, by keeping the cord’s course and adjacent bony canal in the same plane. Good for localization. Suitable for neuroanatomy and gross anatomy curricula when introducing sagittal brain organization, and for neurology, neuroradiology, and neurosurgery texts that correlate clinical syndromes with midline CNS anatomy.
