Description
Presented in lateral section, the cerebrum occupies the superior and anterior cranial cavity with cortical gyri and sulci framing deeper diencephalic landmarks such as the thalamus and hypothalamus. Posterior and inferior to the cerebrum, the cerebellum sits beneath the occipital region, its folia clearly separated from the adjacent brainstem. Caudally, the medulla oblongata continues into the cervical spinal cord, which descends within the vertebral canal posterior to the pharyngeal and oral spaces and inferior to the posterior cranial fossa. Neural parenchyma is color-keyed in blue against the surrounding skull and facial bones, including the nasal cavity, paranasal sinus spaces, mandible, and dentition. A true lateral section is the cleanest way to teach continuity from cerebrum to spinal cord without the visual noise of bilateral symmetry. It also places the brainstem in context for clinical localization, where lesions at the medulla or pontomedullary junction can be correlated with “crossed” findings (ipsilateral cranial nerve deficits with contralateral body weakness or sensory loss) and with disruption of ascending and descending tracts as they funnel through the narrow posterior fossa. The nearby skull base and upper cervical vertebrae provide fixed landmarks used when interpreting sagittal CT and MRI, and when discussing cervicomedullary compression at the foramen magnum, including Chiari malformations. Use this illustration for neuroanatomy lectures on sagittal planes, brainstem-spinal cord transitions, and compartmental relationships in the head and neck, or in clinical teaching files that pair gross anatomy with mid-sagittal neuroimaging. It also fits well in atlases and exam-prep materials that need a single figure to orient students before tract diagrams and cranial nerve pathways.
