Description
Sagittal brain anatomy is rendered in continuity with the spinal cord, allowing the cerebral hemispheres, corpus callosum, diencephalon, and ventricular system to be read in the same plane as the brainstem. Inferior to the cerebrum, the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata align with the cervical spinal cord as it descends within the vertebral canal, with the cerebellum positioned posterior to the brainstem and superior to the foramen magnum. Vertebral bodies lie anterior to the cord, while the vertebral arches and spinous processes form the posterior boundary. Neural tissue is color-coded in blue against a neutral skeletal framework. Continuity across the cervicomedullary junction matters in practice because many lesions ignore the textbook boundary between “brain” and “spinal cord.” Syringomyelia and Chiari I malformation, for example, are best taught by tracing the posterior fossa and foramen magnum down into the upper cervical canal and appreciating how crowding near the medulla can alter CSF flow and cord caliber. This view also supports correlation with MRI, where a mid-sagittal sequence is the workhorse for screening brainstem compression, hydrocephalus (ventricular enlargement), and cervicothoracic alignment.
