Description

Anterior thoracic surface anatomy is presented with a single female breast in situ on the chest wall, with the skin envelope forming the breast mound and tapering superiorly into the upper pole and inferiorly toward the inframammary fold. Centrally, the nipple (papilla mammaria) projects from the areola, which shows the expected circumareolar transition in pigmentation and surface texture. Beneath the skin, the mammary gland (glandula mammaria) and surrounding adipose tissue are implied as the bulk of the breast, sitting superficial to pectoralis major and extending toward the axilla as the lateral tail of Spence. Surface detail matters in breast medicine because inspection still guides triage before any imaging. Subtle changes in nipple position, areolar distortion, or focal skin tethering reflect traction on Cooper ligaments from an underlying lesion, and diffuse peau d’orange appearance can accompany lymphatic obstruction in inflammatory carcinoma. This external view also supports teaching of quadrant-based localization (upper outer quadrant and axillary tail are common sites for malignancy) and procedural planning, since incision placement around the areola and along the inframammary fold aims to respect skin tension lines and preserve the nipple-areolar complex. Use this asset for preclinical gross anatomy and surface anatomy modules, breast examination training materials, patient education on normal nipple and areolar morphology, and medical publishing layouts that need a realistic anterior chest presentation without internal dissection. It also fits surgical and radiology texts introducing mammoplasty landmarks, mastectomy scar planning, or clinical documentation of external breast findings. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
