Description
Posterolateral views of a female child’s thorax reveal paired lungs filling most of the pleural cavities, with the apices extending superiorly toward the thoracic inlet and the bases resting on the domes of the diaphragm. The trachea descends in the midline and bifurcates into the right and left main bronchi at the carina, each bronchus coursing inferolaterally to enter the lung at the hilum with the pulmonary vessels. Surface translucency hints at the bronchial tree branching distally into progressively smaller bronchi and bronchioles that terminate in alveolar regions within the lung parenchyma. Ribs and intercostal spaces frame the organs. Clear landmarks. Pediatric lung anatomy is not just a smaller adult version, and a posterior oblique perspective helps you appreciate how much thoracic volume is occupied by lung tissue relative to the mediastinum in childhood. That matters when teaching why respiratory distress in children can escalate quickly, and why posterior auscultation and percussion map so well to lobar disease patterns, including right middle lobe pathology that may be harder to localize from the back.
