Description
Running along the lateral side of each lower leg, the fibula (highlighted in blue) parallels the tibia from the level of the proximal tibiofibular joint to the ankle. Superiorly, its head sits posterolateral to the lateral tibial condyle, just inferior to the knee joint line, while the long, slender shaft descends lateral to the tibial shaft. Distally, the lateral malleolus projects inferior to the tibial plafond and lateral to the talus, framing the lateral aspect of the ankle mortise in this frontal (anterior) view. Patellae, femora, and the tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges provide full lower-limb skeletal context. Orienting the fibula in relation to the tibia and talus matters because the bone is a key landmark for ankle stability and for understanding syndesmotic mechanics. Lateral malleolar fractures (often Weber B or C patterns) and high ankle sprains involve the distal fibula and the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis, and malalignment here changes the tibiotalar mortise even when the tibia appears intact. Proximally, the fibular head lies close to the common fibular (peroneal) nerve as it wraps around the neck, a frequent point of traction or compression during knee trauma and fibular neck fractures.
