Description
Arising from the subclavian artery via the costocervical trunk, the deep cervical artery courses superiorly and posteriorly at the root of the neck, traveling deep to the prevertebral fascia toward the transverse processes of the cervical vertebrae. In an anterior perspective, the vessel is seen in relationship to the common carotid artery and internal jugular vein within the carotid sheath, with the subclavian artery lying inferiorly and lateral to the trachea and thyroid gland. Small branches track medially toward the vertebral artery and laterally toward the scalene musculature, forming anastomoses with the occipital and ascending cervical arteries. Orientation is straightforward. This arterial segment matters when you are mapping collateral pathways in the posterior cervical region or planning exposure at the thoracic inlet. During lower neck dissection, level IV and supraclavicular nodal surgery, and central venous access near the venous angle, unrecognized variants in the costocervical trunk and deep cervical artery can complicate hemostasis and obscure the relationship of the vessel to the sympathetic chain and brachial plexus roots. The anterior view also supports teaching the difference between the thyrocervical trunk (typically giving rise to the ascending cervical via the inferior thyroid artery) and the costocervical trunk (giving rise to the deep cervical artery), a common point of confusion in trainees. Use this illustration in head and neck anatomy courses, vascular and cardiothoracic modules covering subclavian branch patterns, and surgical atlas figures discussing supraclavicular approaches and bleeding control at the base of the neck.
