Description

Arising from the posterior aspect of the femoral artery in the proximal thigh, the profunda femoris (deep femoral) artery courses posterolaterally toward the posterior compartment, passing deep to adductor longus and along the medial side of the femur. Several perforating arteries branch from its posterior surface, pierce adductor magnus, and emerge near the linea aspera to supply the hamstrings and surrounding musculature. Proximally, the deep femoral gives off the medial and lateral circumflex femoral arteries, which wrap around the femoral neck near the hip joint, while the femur, pelvis, and posterior knee region provide fixed osseous landmarks for orientation.
