Description
Arising from the common femoral artery high in the proximal thigh, the deep femoral artery (profunda femoris) courses posteriorly and laterally, running deep to the adductor longus and along the posteromedial aspect of the femur. From a posterior perspective, its perforating arteries are seen passing through adductor magnus to reach the posterior compartment, where they track between the hamstring muscles and anastomose with branches around the knee. The superficial femoral artery continues more anteriorly toward the adductor canal, while the popliteal artery is visible in the popliteal fossa distal to the adductor hiatus. Bony landmarks include the pelvis, femur, patella, tibia, fibula, and the tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges distally. Orientation is unambiguous. Clinically, the profunda femoris is the dominant arterial supply to the thigh and a key collateral pathway when the superficial femoral artery is stenosed or occluded, with the perforators and the descending branch of the lateral circumflex femoral artery contributing to genicular anastomoses. This posterior view clarifies why penetrating trauma to the medial thigh, or fractures of the proximal femur, can produce deep hemorrhage that is not apparent on anterior inspection. It also supports teaching of posterior compartment ischemia and the surgical logic behind proximal femoral exposure and control of profunda branches. Suitable for gross anatomy and radiologic anatomy modules covering lower limb vasculature, including correlation with CTA or angiographic runs of the femoral system. It also fits trauma, vascular surgery, and orthopedic publications illustrating collateral circulation and the relationship of perforators to the femur and hamstring compartment.
