Description
Seen from a superior cranial view with the calvaria opened and the dura mater removed, the superior sagittal sinus tracks along the midline groove of the falx attachment while paired transverse sinuses course posterolaterally toward the sigmoid segments. At the anterolateral skull base, the foramen spinosum is identified adjacent to the greater wing of the sphenoid, and a small emissary vein passes through it to communicate between extracranial venous channels and the intracranial dural venous system. Middle meningeal vessel landmarks lie in the same neighborhood. Relationships are clear in plan view. Emissary veins matter because they are valveless connections that can transmit infection or thrombosis across the cranial vault, and the foramen spinosum route sits near regions involved in otitis and mastoid disease as venous drainage converges toward the transverse and sigmoid sinuses. Small does not mean benign.
