Emerging at the cerebellopontine angle, the facial nerve (CN VII) is shown from an inferior perspective as it exits the lateral pontomedullary junction, with the nervus intermedius closely apposed to its medial aspect. From this vantage, CN VII sits anterior to the cerebellum and posterolateral to the pons, in the same crowded corridor as the vestibulocochlear nerve (CN VIII), which typically lies just lateral and slightly posterior. The basilar surface anatomy of the brain is also in view, including the medulla oblongata inferiorly and the optic nerves with the optic chiasm more anteriorly on the ventral diencephalon.
