Description
Arising from the pontomedullary junction near the midline, the abducens nerve (CN VI) is shown emerging on the inferior surface of the brainstem, just anterior to the cerebellum and medial to the facial and vestibulocochlear nerves at the cerebellopontine angle. From this ventral perspective, the pons sits superior to the medulla oblongata, while the cerebellar hemispheres lie posterolateral, framing the brainstem. Nearby cranial nerves are logically included for orientation, with the oculomotor nerve (CN III) and trochlear nerve (CN IV) positioned more rostrally at the midbrain level, helping the viewer distinguish brainstem exit zones by segment. Yellow nerve coloration cleanly separates the cranial nerve roots from surrounding parenchyma. Inferior views matter because CN VI has a long intracranial course and a fixation point at the clivus that makes it a frequent casualty in raised intracranial pressure, where stretching can produce an abduction deficit and horizontal diplopia. Small lesions at the dorsal pons can injure the abducens nucleus or fascicles, and the resulting pattern (isolated lateral rectus weakness versus a gaze palsy when the paramedian pontine reticular formation is involved) depends on the precise relationship of the nerve fibers to the pontine tegmentum. Localization starts here. The midline emergence at the pontomedullary sulcus is the anchor.
