Description
Anteriorly, the fibula is presented as the slender lateral bone of the leg, with the head and neck positioned proximally just inferior to the lateral tibial condyle and the long shaft descending toward the lateral malleolus. Along the shaft, the sharp interosseous border faces medially toward the tibia, forming the lateral margin of the interosseous membrane. Distally, the lateral malleolus projects inferior to the tibial plafond and lies lateral to the talus, defining the outer wall of the ankle mortise. Small landmarks matter. Clinically, an anterior fibular view helps clarify why the fibula is a poor choice for weight-bearing descriptions yet remains decisive for ankle stability and syndesmotic integrity. Weber B and Weber C ankle fractures track along the distal fibula and relate directly to the anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament and syndesmosis, guiding decisions about stress radiographs and screw fixation across the distal tibiofibular joint. Proximally, the relationship of the fibular neck to the common fibular (peroneal) nerve explains foot drop risk with fibular head fractures and lateral knee trauma.
