Description
Posteriorly oriented dry bone anatomy is presented for the fibula (calf bone) of an adult male, extending from the rounded caput fibulae proximally to the lateral malleolus distally. The fibular head sits superior and slightly posterior to the slender corpus fibulae, and its articular facet faces medially toward the lateral condyle of the tibia at the proximal tibiofibular joint. Along the shaft, the posterior surface and medial crest define a sharp border for the interosseous membrane, while the distal end flares to form the malleolar fossa on the posteromedial aspect of the lateral malleolus. Clear landmarks. A posterior perspective matters because many clinically relevant attachments and entrapment sites sit off the bone’s posterolateral contour rather than its more commonly taught lateral profile. The common fibular (peroneal) nerve winds around the neck of the fibula just distal to the head, making this region a frequent site of injury in fibular neck fractures or tight casting, with resulting foot drop. Distally, the posterior fibula and malleolar fossa relate directly to syndesmotic stability and to operative fixation planning for Weber B and C ankle fractures, where posterior screw trajectories and the relationship to the distal tibiofibular joint are assessed. Use this asset for lower-limb osteology labs in gross anatomy, orthopaedic teaching files on ankle fracture patterns and syndesmotic injury, or as a reference plate in surgical atlases discussing lateral malleolar approaches and proximal fibular exposure.
